18-year-old motorcyclist killed in head-on collision with truck on Hehuanshan Highway

A tragic accident on the Hehuanshan Highway has claimed the life of an 18-year-old motorcyclist. The young rider, identified by the surname Lai, was traveling downhill on Taiwan's Provincial Highway 14 Jia (Hehuanshan Highway) when he collided head-on with an oncoming truck on a curve at kilometer marker 10.

The impact sent Lai flying from his motorcycle, and he became pinned beneath the truck's front left wheel. Emergency services, including the Ren'ai Fire Brigade, responded quickly. They managed to lift the truck to free the rider, who was found with severe, life-threatening injuries. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, including CPR and the use of an AED, and initial stabilization at Taichung Veterans General Hospital Puli Branch, Lai was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. the following day due to the severity of his injuries.

Lai had obtained his motorcycle license only a few months prior to the incident. He had started his journey down from Hehuanshan around 7 a.m. The Ren'ai Police Precinct has completed its on-site investigation and is continuing to probe the exact cause of the collision. Police are reminding all road users, especially on winding mountain roads with numerous blind spots, to reduce speed when approaching curves and downhill sections and to remain vigilant to ensure their own safety and that of others.
