19 Areas Record Unhealthy Air Pollutant Index Readings

Malaysia is grappling with worsening haze conditions, with 19 areas across the country recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings by Tuesday evening. The situation is particularly concerning in Sarawak, where Serian registered the highest reading at 191, dangerously close to the 'very unhealthy' threshold.

Sarawak remains the most affected state, with five other areas, Kuching (181), Samarahan (173), Sri Aman (155), Bintulu (142), and Mukah (141), also experiencing unhealthy air quality. In Selangor and the Federal Territories, Johan Setia recorded the highest API at 162, followed by Shah Alam (113), Cheras (109), Putrajaya (108), and Kuala Selangor (108).

Northern Malaysia is also experiencing the effects, with Sungai Petani and Alor Setar in Kedah recording API readings of 154 and 148, respectively. Minden in Penang recorded 113. In Perak, Seri Manjung and Tasek Ipoh both registered 148, while Tanjung Malim reached 101. Other areas with unhealthy readings include Bukit Rambai in Melaka (104) and Kota Tinggi in Johor (107).

API readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy. Health authorities are urging the public to limit strenuous outdoor activities and to wear face masks if venturing outdoors to mitigate the health risks associated with the poor air quality.
