About Utusan Malaysia
Utusan Malaysia, originally founded in 1939, was historically owned by the Utusan Group, which had strong ties to the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). After ceasing operations in 2019 due to financial difficulties, it was relaunched in 2020 and is now owned by Media Mulia, a company linked to tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, who also holds significant stakes in Media Prima, Malaysia's largest media conglomerate.
Historically, Utusan Malaysia has been widely accused of serving as a propaganda mouthpiece for the former ruling UMNO government and inciting racial hatred, particularly through its promotion of 'Ketuanan Melayu' (Malay supremacy).
