2,000 children injured in traffic as school starts

As the school year approaches, Sweden faces a heightened risk of traffic accidents involving children, with around 2,000 youngsters sustaining injuries each year.

Trafiksäkerhetsexpert Jacob Sidenvall described the period as "sensitive," noting that many children are new to traffic. He highlighted that the trend is moving in the wrong direction, despite efforts to improve safety. Sidenvall urged drivers to be particularly aware of children during morning and afternoon commutes.

There is much to think about when everyone is returning to daily routines, and there is a fragility around it. Many children are new traffic participants, which increases the risk of making mistakes.

In response, numerous municipalities are establishing car-free zones around schools. Uppsala municipality has piloted such zones, alongside improved lighting and marked pedestrian paths, reporting positive feedback from parents and students. Traffic planner Shirin Khalil stated that while some parents find drop-offs more difficult, the majority support the safety initiatives.

If all drivers, not just those who have children, become aware of this, I think it will do a lot to make things easier for everyone.

Sidenvall also advised parents to prepare children for their commutes, suggesting practicing the route beforehand and allowing ample time to avoid morning stress. The data from Strada and Transportstyrelsen indicates a fluctuating but generally high number of child traffic injuries during August and September over the past decade, with projections for 2024 and 2025 suggesting a continued increase.

It is many parents who care and are engaged and want traffic safety to be increased. Then there are those who react to it becoming more difficult to drop off, but the majority are positive about the change.
