2,331 displaced in Nuwara Eliya due to adverse weather

Severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall, has caused significant displacement in Sri Lanka's Nuwara Eliya district. As of August 4, 2026, 2,331 individuals from 581 families have been affected by the adverse conditions, according to Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Thushari Thennakoon.

The situation has also led to six people going missing. Four individuals disappeared after a landslide in the Morahhena village area of Ginigathena, while two others went missing due to flash floods in the Ambegamuwa region. These incidents highlight the dangerous impact of the ongoing inclement weather.

In response to the crisis, authorities have set up safe centers to accommodate those who have been displaced. Currently, 1,725 people from 433 families are residing in these temporary shelters, receiving assistance and protection from the elements. The district administration is working to manage the ongoing emergency and provide support to those affected.
