2,500 evacuated in French Provence as wildfire reignites; Bordeaux crisis not over

A wildfire in the Var department of southeastern France has flared up again, prompting the evacuation of approximately 2,500 residents. The blaze, which began on July 21, has now consumed a total of 5,500 hectares. For some families, this marks the third time they have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing fires.

The evacuations occurred in neighborhoods within the towns of Correns and Montfort sur Agens. Officials reported that about 1,000 hectares burned between the afternoon and evening of the announcement, adding to the previously burned area. The fire is located in the Gros Bessillon massif, north of the Mediterranean port city of Toulon. Strong winds, including gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour from the mistral, have fueled the resurgence of the flames, exacerbated by temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius.

A significant response is underway, with 700 firefighters on the ground supported by eight Canadair water-bombing aircraft and six helicopters. They are battling the flames under challenging meteorological conditions. In a separate but related crisis, the massive wildfire in the Gironde department near Bordeaux, which devastated 42,000 hectares, is showing signs of improvement. While the fire is not fully contained, officials noted that the burned area has stabilized, and progress is being made daily.

Despite the progress in Gironde, several hotspots remain, particularly near the coast. Authorities have allowed residents to return to many evacuated areas around Arcachon Bay, including towns like Biganos, Audenge, Andernos les Bains, and Lanton, as well as tourist accommodations. However, five municipalities are still awaiting authorization for residents to return.
