2 Firefighters Die in Greece as Crews Battle Massive Blaze in France

Wildfires continued to rage across Europe, claiming the lives of two firefighters on the Greek island of Crete. Officials confirmed the deaths on Wednesday, as crews in southern France battled a massive, uncontained blaze that had expanded to an area four times the size of Paris.

The dangerous combination of extreme heat, drought conditions, and powerful winds is severely compromising containment efforts across the continent. The situation has led to widespread evacuations, with a third of a million people forced from their homes and vacation sites in France and Spain at the peak of the crisis.

In France's Gironde region, firefighters experienced a brief respite overnight as the wildfire's spread slowed. However, temperatures were forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), with strengthening afternoon winds threatening to reignite the blaze. Investigators suspect routine brush-clearing work near a high-voltage line may have sparked the inferno, despite appearing to comply with regulations.

Over 2,200 firefighters and more than 20 aircraft remain mobilized in France, supported by crews from across the country and European partners. "We strike quickly and strike hard at any new smoke emissions," said Gironde fire commander Matthieu Jomain.
