2 tunnels and 50 bridges to be built on Barskoon—Bedel highway

The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Kyrgyzstan has confirmed the full completion of essential surveys for the ambitious Barskoon-Bedel highway project. This critical infrastructure development, spanning approximately 161 kilometers, is set to significantly enhance connectivity between the Issyk-Kul region and the 'Bedel' border crossing point with the People's Republic of China.

The project's scope is substantial, involving the construction of two major tunnels: Tunnel No. 1 (Sook) with a length of 5,340 meters and Tunnel No. 2 (Ashuu-Suu) measuring 3,788 meters. In addition to these tunnels, the plan includes the erection of over 50 bridges and various protective engineering structures, underscoring the complexity and scale of the undertaking.

Construction activities are proceeding according to the approved schedule, with the establishment of essential temporary facilities, including concrete plants, crushing and sorting complexes, quarries, and worker accommodations, currently underway. Approximately 557 workers are engaged on the site, with plans to bring in additional specialists as the project progresses.

Initiated on August 26, 2025, the Barskoon-Bedel highway project is slated for completion within a five-year timeframe. This strategic road is poised to become a vital artery for trade and transport, facilitating smoother transit between Kyrgyzstan and China and potentially boosting economic activity in the region.

The successful completion of the survey phase marks a significant milestone, paving the way for the intensive construction work ahead. This project represents a key investment in Kyrgyzstan's infrastructure, aiming to improve logistical capabilities and strengthen regional ties.
