Two U.S. service members were killed and another is missing following a drone and missile attack on a base in Jordan, the U.S. military announced Saturday. This incident marks the first U.S. troop deaths resulting from direct Iranian fire since the initial phase of the ongoing conflict. Since the war began, a total of 16 U.S. service members have been killed and over 430 wounded. The announcement came shortly after Iran's supreme leader warned of "unforgettable lessons" for the U.S. if it continues its attacks on the Islamic Republic. An Iranian negotiator also stated that Tehran is suspending its commitments to an interim deal aimed at ending the fighting. The conflict has largely centered on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport. Recent strikes have expanded to threaten civilian infrastructure, including desalination plants, raising concerns for the global economy. Previous U.S. service member deaths include a helicopter pilot who crashed earlier this month, six soldiers killed in an Iranian drone strike on a command center in Kuwait, one soldier who died after an attack in Saudi Arabia, and six killed when a refueling aircraft crashed in Iraq. The most significant damage from recent Iranian strikes occurred in Kuwait, where a water desalination plant and an oil facility were hit. Firefighters and a worker were injured battling other blazes. Kuwait briefly closed its airspace due to missile threats, and Kuwait Airways rescheduled flights. Iraq reported shooting down attack drones over Irbil, while Jordan's air defense systems downed Iranian missiles. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia also reported air raid sirens. The secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council accused Iran of war crimes for striking infrastructure and civilian facilities.
