20 injured in Croatia as freight and passenger trains collide

A serious train collision occurred in Croatia on August 8, leaving 20 people injured. The accident involved a freight train and a passenger train operated by Croatian Railways (HŽ).

Of the injured, six are in serious condition, including three who are in intensive care. Officials reported that while their vital signs are stable, they are receiving close monitoring. The train driver of the passenger train suffered severe injuries but is conscious and able to communicate. The driver of the freight train, described as a young, highly trained employee, is reportedly in shock.

Preliminary, unofficial information from the Train Dispatchers Union suggests the freight train may have disregarded a stop signal before striking the passenger train. Croatia's Minister of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, visited the injured at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb and confirmed that no lives were lost. An official investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
