20 Years of Marquess: New Album 'Superelástico' Blends Latin Pop with Nostalgia

The German band Marquess, hailing from Hannover, is celebrating two decades in music with the release of their new album, "Superelástico." The album, featuring twelve songs and a bonus track, continues the band's established formula of catchy melodies, Spanish lyrics, and a strong Latin-pop influence, aiming to provide an escape from the everyday.

Marquess first achieved widespread recognition in 2006 with their hit single "El Temperamento." A year later, they scored one of their biggest successes with "Vayamos Compañeros." Long before Spanish-language pop became a staple in German charts, Marquess successfully introduced their Latin sound to a broader audience, earning multiple successful albums and prestigious gold and platinum certifications.

The band recalls that "Vayamos Compañeros" showed early promise, with birds on Mallorca reportedly imitating its distinctive whistling intro during its creation. The song remains a staple of their live performances. They also express surprise at the enduring popularity of "El Temperamento," noting that younger audiences now frequently sing along to their oldest hit.

Other tracks on the album include "Vamos a la playa," a nostalgic reflection on childhood beach vacations, and "Málaga," expressing a longing for the Andalusian port city. The album also touches on themes of love with "Farmácia" and the power of a smile in "Tu sonrisa." "Manos arriba" is an upbeat celebration of life, featuring salsa rhythms, brass, and percussion.
