2026 Commonwealth Games: Nigeria makes bright start with six medals

Team Nigeria launched its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign with a remarkable performance on the opening day, clinching six medals in para powerlifting and securing second place on the overall standings behind Australia.

The nation's para powerlifters were in exceptional form, contributing three gold and three silver medals. Esther Nworgu claimed Nigeria's first gold in the women's lightweight event, setting two Commonwealth Games records. Her compatriot Esther Oyema secured the silver medal, completing a Nigerian one-two finish.

Team captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered another dominant gold medal performance in the women's heavyweight category, setting a new world record and successfully defending her title. Rita Ferdinand added a silver in the same event, also setting a world record lift. Riluwan Idris secured the third gold for Nigeria in the men's heavyweight category.

Veteran Roland Ezuruike opened Nigeria's medal account with a silver in the men's lightweight event, extending his long and successful career. The para powerlifters' success underscores Nigeria's standing as a global leader in the sport, having won three of the four available gold medals on day one.

Beyond powerlifting, Nigeria's 3x3 basketball team won their opening match against the Cayman Islands, though they later lost to Australia. Boxer Ayomide Foly Hassan was eliminated in the Round of 32. The team arrived in Glasgow aiming for a strong performance, supported by improved athlete welfare initiatives.
