Pep Guardiola has reportedly declined the opportunity to become the new head coach of the Italian national team, prioritizing family reasons. The Italian Football Federation president, Giovanni Malago, confirmed that discussions had occurred with the former Manchester City manager. Guardiola, who concluded a highly successful 10-year spell at Manchester City, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League win, is said to be seeking a break to focus on his personal life after an intense period at the top level of club football. Sources close to the coach reiterated that immediate international management was not feasible due to his desire for a hiatus. While Guardiola is reportedly open to international football in the future, several national teams have expressed interest. Gennaro Gattuso resigned as Italy coach in April after the team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Other candidates previously linked to the vacancy included Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo.
