2026 Flag Football World Cup: Panama women's team advances to next round

Panama's women's flag football team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 IFAF World Championship, currently underway in Düsseldorf, Germany. The team concluded the group stage with a commendable 2-1 record, securing second place in Group D and earning their ticket to the next round.

The Panamanian squad demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament. In their opening match, they faced a strong Canadian team and lost 27-14. Despite the defeat, Carolina Ojo Atencio delivered a standout performance, scoring and leading the team with 10 receptions, including Panama's first touchdown of the championship. Clarisse Castillo Escobar also contributed a touchdown in that game.

Panama rebounded strongly in their second game, achieving a decisive 37-13 victory over Japan. Quarterback Orlanda Castro orchestrated the offense with three touchdown passes, while Clarisse Castillo again shone, leading the team with 7 receptions. The team sealed their advancement by defeating Brazil 12-6 in their final group stage match, solidifying their 2-1 record and second-place finish in Group D.

Looking ahead, Panama is set to compete against Great Britain in the quarterfinals. This crucial matchup will determine their progress to the semifinals and is a key step in their pursuit of one of the two direct qualification spots for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
