2026 World Cup: FIFA changes pre-match lineup format

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) is introducing a revamped pre-match ceremony for the 2026 World Cup, a significant shift from its traditional format. Under the new protocol, every player listed on a matchday squad, not just the starting eleven, will participate in the on-field procession.

This departure from the customary World Cup routine will see all players from both teams walk onto the pitch through a designated arch, accompanied by youth escorts. They will then gather around the center circle for the national anthems. FIFA also plans to display large national flag banners on either side of the pitch during the ceremony.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized that the initiative is designed to ensure all players selected for a match can share the experience of representing their nations. He stated that having all players and referees face each other during the anthems will foster a moment of unity, pride, and emotion. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will also be the first to feature an expanded 48 teams.
