2027: Atiku, Obi mull options ahead of single-candidate summit

Uncertainty clouds a proposal for a unified opposition presidential candidate in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, as political parties exhibit divergent stances. The initiative stems from the Group of 100 Nigerians (G-100), led by former All Progressives Congress chieftain Salisu Lukman, who urged opposition leaders to consolidate their efforts against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

The G-100 advocates for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other opposition figures to prioritize the collective goal of defeating the ruling APC over individual ambitions. They argue that a fragmented opposition, regardless of its size, will struggle to unseat the incumbent party, making a single candidacy essential for consolidating votes.

To advance this proposal, Lukman announced plans to convene an opposition summit in Abuja on August 18. However, indications suggest potential hurdles. Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, stopped short of confirming his principal's attendance, stating that confirmation would follow finalized scheduling. Shaibu conveyed Abubakar's welcome of "genuine initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic opposition" and providing a "credible alternative" to the current administration.

His Excellency has consistently maintained that the challenges confronting Nigeria require opposition parties, leaders and citizens of goodwill to put the national interest above individual or partisan considerations. There is considerable merit in building the broadest possible democratic coalition ahead of 2027.

Abubakar emphasized that any process toward unity must be transparent, inclusive, and democratic, ultimately producing a candidate who can gain the confidence of Nigerians. Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress candidate remained evasive regarding the single-candidate proposal but confirmed ongoing consultations with various opposition leaders and stakeholders. The overarching objective, he noted, is to strengthen the opposition and protect democratic principles, a goal that transcends individual interests.
