2027: Rainbow Coalition panel begins talks with Fubara, allies

A reconciliation committee, headed by Magnus Abe, has initiated discussions aimed at bridging the political divide between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his supporters, and members of the Rainbow Coalition. The committee's formation follows recent statements by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, indicating that such talks would commence.

Initial meetings took place at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The gathering included prominent figures aligned with the FCT Minister, such as Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, Amb. Desmond Akawor, and House of Representatives member Kelechi Nwogu. Representing Governor Fubara's faction was Dr. Tamunosiki Gogo-Jaja, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Education. Also present was Kingsley Chinda, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for the 2027 election, indicating a complex political landscape.

The committee itself comprises 13 members, with Abe serving as its chairman. While the specifics of the inaugural meeting were not publicly disclosed, sources indicated that participation was limited to the designated committee members. Efforts to obtain details about the outcome of the talks proved unsuccessful, as several contacted individuals did not respond to inquiries.

This reconciliation effort gains significance amid recent political maneuvers. Governor Fubara had previously declared his return to his "political family" and openly supported APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda. He also encouraged his supporters to join the Rainbow Coalition and back Chinda in the upcoming 2027 elections. Several of Fubara's allies, including former Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Chairman Chijioke Ihunwo and former Special Adviser Dr. Darlington Orji, have publicly aligned with this move.
