2027: Wike-backed PDP affirms ex-senator, Onor, as consensus presidential candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with backing from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially named Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. Onor, a former member of the National Assembly, was the sole aspirant for the party's nomination.

We have worked day and night with the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure that we arrive at a consensus.

Samuel Ortom, Chairman of the 2026 PDP Presidential Primary Election Committee and former governor of Benue State, announced the decision at the party's national secretariat in Abuja. He stated that extensive consultations were held across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to reach this consensus. PDP National Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed expressed strong confidence in the party's prospects for the 2027 elections, highlighting that Onor was the only aspirant.

We have only one aspirant, and I am confident that we will make a significant impact in the 2027 general election.

In his acceptance speech, Onor vowed to approach the presidential race with courage, seriousness, competence, and intellectual depth, promising a pan-Nigerian disposition. He assured citizens that the PDP would perform exceptionally well, aiming to surpass its past achievements. "If we were great yesterday, we are going to be exponentially greater tomorrow," he declared, pledging to act with justice and fear of God.

I take this responsibility very seriously. I shall fly the PDP flag with energy, with courage, with competence and with intellectual depth. I shall do it with a pan-Nigerian disposition in all that I do.

Onor positioned the PDP as the only formidable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, dismissing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as unlikely to endure. He identified a lack of good leadership as Nigeria's primary challenge and promised to transform the nation into a great power, evoking the image of Nigeria as the "giant of Africa" at independence. He also committed to an issue-based, grassroots campaign, focusing on tackling insecurity and poverty, particularly at the local level, emphasizing the need to cure the nation's poverty despite its abundant resources.
