2030 World Cup confirmed for South America with 64 teams; Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay to host

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to be a landmark event, celebrating the tournament's 100th anniversary with a unique multi-continental hosting arrangement. Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will serve as the primary hosts, bringing the World Cup back to South America for the first time in over four decades. This decision marks a significant moment, especially for Uruguay, which hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930 and emerged as champions. For Paraguay, it's a historic first as a host nation.

The tournament will also feature an expanded field of 64 teams, a further increase from the 48 teams participating in the 2026 edition. The announcement came from Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez via social media, accompanied by a video montage of past South American World Cups and the host cities: Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Asunción.

Adding another layer to the 2030 World Cup's global reach, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco have also secured hosting rights. While the exact distribution of matches between the South American and European/African hosts has not yet been confirmed by FIFA, this collaborative approach underscores a new era of international sports cooperation.
