208 classics and a rivalry that brings Santa Cruz to a standstill

Blooming and Oriente Petrolero will renew Santa Cruz’s biggest football rivalry on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tahuichi Aguilera stadium. The match, part of the second round of the Copa Bolivia, will be the 208th professional classic between the clubs.

Oriente Petrolero holds the advantage in meetings since Bolivia’s professional league began in 1977. The Refinero has won 79 times, while Blooming has 65 victories. The teams have drawn 63 matches, giving Oriente a 14-win edge.

Their rivalry predates the professional era. The first recorded friendly took place on May 1, 1958, when Oriente, then known as Petroleros, won 3-1. The matchup grew in importance during the late 1960s, as both clubs became the region’s biggest draws and most prominent teams.

Several games remain part of the derby’s shared memory. Blooming won 6-3 in 1984 in the highest-scoring classic, with nine goals. The club also recorded a 5-0 victory in 1994, while Oriente won 5-1 in 1995. In 1985, the teams met in the Copa Libertadores in a match that decided a semifinal place. Oriente won 1-0 and advanced.

Gualberto Mojica and Horacio Raúl Baldessari are the professional-era leading scorers, with 17 goals each. Both players represented the two major Santa Cruz clubs. The historical numbers favor Oriente, but the next 90 minutes will add another chapter to a rivalry that began before the league existed.
