22 Patients Receive Free GH¢2 Million Heart Procedures at Korle Bu Cardio Centre

A five-day medical mission successfully provided life-saving cardiac device procedures to 22 patients with severe heart rhythm disorders at the Korle Bu Cardio Centre in Ghana. The procedures, valued at around GH¢2 million, were a collaborative effort involving the Mount Carmel Foundation, the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC), the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, and Africa World Airlines.

A team of specialists from Ghana and the United States performed complex interventions, including Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT), Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs), and left bundle branch area pacing. Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, Director of the NCTC, highlighted the success as a testament to strong teamwork among various medical professionals. He assured that patients who could not be treated during the mission would still receive care.

One beneficiary, Juliet Asabea Awuku, expressed profound gratitude for the successful CRT device procedure, calling it a new chance at life and a significant financial relief. Dr. Kamel Addo, the team lead from Mount Carmel Health System, praised the Ghanaian medical staff for their professionalism and teamwork. He noted that the mission focused on advanced procedures for patients unable to afford them, with support from the Mount Carmel Foundation reducing costs.

The partnership is set to continue beyond the outreach, aiming to enhance specialized treatment and build local expertise through training and knowledge sharing to improve advanced cardiac care in Ghana.
