23-year-old DNA trace leads police to suspect in robbery

German police have apprehended a suspect in a February 2024 robbery thanks to a DNA sample collected over two decades ago. The suspect, a 40-year-old man, is accused of participating in a raid on a supermarket in Glandorf, where he and an accomplice allegedly threatened the store manager with a firearm before fleeing.

The breakthrough came from a single disposable glove left behind at the crime scene. Forensic analysis revealed DNA that, while initially not matching anyone in the national database, had been previously found at two other incidents. In 2003, the same DNA was discovered on a cable tie left at the scene of a robbery targeting an 84-year-old woman in Colnrade. It was also found on a cigarette butt discarded during a break-in at a gambling hall in Wildeshausen in 2023.

Investigations into the gambling hall break-in led authorities to the 40-year-old man, who lived near the elderly victim's residence in 2003. A DNA sample obtained from him confirmed the match with the evidence from all three crime scenes. Police are now pursuing charges of attempted aggravated robbery against the suspect and are continuing their efforts to identify his accomplices.
