27 Bodies Recovered After Guyana Ferry Capsizes, Dozens Still Missing

Twenty-seven bodies have been recovered after a ferry carrying 179 people capsized off the coast of Guyana over the weekend. The vessel, MV Barima, was traveling from the capital, Georgetown, to the northwestern village of Port Kaituma when it overturned.

Search and recovery efforts are continuing, with 69 people rescued so far. However, 83 passengers remain unaccounted for. The search area has been significantly expanded to approximately 1,040 square kilometers, with assistance from private energy-sector vessels and divers. The ferry has been located on the seabed.

In connection with the disaster, the ferry's captain and at least one other crew member have been taken into police custody. They tested positive for marijuana as part of the ongoing investigation. Prime Minister Mark Phillips has launched an inquiry into potential institutional failures that may have contributed to the tragedy. He has pledged legal action against anyone found responsible for negligence or misconduct.
