30 Years After Atlanta Glory, Uba Sani Honors Amokachi, Babayaro and Lawal

Thirty years after Nigeria’s historic Olympic football triumph, three Kaduna-born members of the team have finally received recognition from their home state. Governor Uba Sani awarded Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Babayaro and Garba Lawal plots of land and named streets after them in Kaduna.

The former Super Eagles players visited Kaduna Government House during a courtesy call that became a tribute to their role in the country’s greatest Olympic football achievement. The 1996 team, known as the Dream Team, defeated Mexico 2-0 in the quarter-finals before producing a dramatic comeback against Brazil. Nigeria recovered from 3-1 down to win 4-3 in extra time, with Victor Ikpeba scoring the decisive goal.

Nigeria then beat Argentina 3-2 in the final, coming from behind again. Emmanuel Amunike scored the winning goal in the closing moments. The victory made Nigeria the first African country to win the Olympic men’s football gold medal and marked a defining moment for a generation of players who later built careers in Europe and with the national team.

Yet the players said official promises made after their return from Atlanta went unfulfilled for decades. “Thirty years now, none were fulfilled,” Amokachi said on behalf of the group. The governor’s action, they said, delivered the commitment at the state level.

Amokachi, known as “The Bull,” was a prominent Nigerian footballer who played in Europe and starred for the national team in the 1990s. Babayaro, one of the youngest members of the Olympic squad, later enjoyed a successful career in England, especially with Chelsea. Lawal also became an important member of the Olympic-winning team and the Super Eagles. Their recognition comes from a golden period that also included Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and its debut at the FIFA World Cup.
