300kg Bomb Removed from Central Hai Phong Street

Military engineers in Hai Phong have removed a roughly 300kg bomb from beneath a busy central street after construction workers found it four meters underground.

The bomb was discovered on Sept. 1 at 96 Cau Dat Street, where landowner Tran Tuan Minh and a group of workers were digging foundations for a house. It measured about 1.2 meters long and 40 centimeters in diameter. The device remained intact, although its outer paint had oxidized.

After receiving reports from residents and the Le Chan ward military command, the Hai Phong Military Command sent engineering personnel to examine the object and assess its condition. Officials then prepared a plan to excavate, recover and move it away from the residential area.

Authorities temporarily barred people and vehicles from part of Cau Dat Street from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sept. 4. Police directed traffic away from the restricted area between the Cau Dat-Hai Ba Trung and Cau Dat-Nguyen Duc Canh intersections.

Engineers lifted the bomb from the four-meter depth and transported it safely away from the street without affecting residents or property. It was scheduled to be taken to the Nui Voi area in An Lao for temporary storage before being destroyed. Officials reminded residents not to approach, move or interfere with suspected bombs, mines or other explosive objects.
