303 Million Lei Investment in Tetila–Horezu–Râmnicu Vâlcea Gas Pipeline; When Will It Be Completed?

Transgaz, Romania's national gas transport company, is accelerating a significant infrastructure project to expand natural gas access in the country's southwestern regions. The company is investing approximately 303 million lei (around 58 million euros) in a new pipeline connecting Tetila, Horezu, and Râmnicu Vâlcea. This initiative is designed to integrate the Horezu-Râmnicu Vâlcea area into the national gas transport network and bring gas infrastructure to communities in Gorj and Vâlcea counties that currently lack it.

The investment, worth approximately 303 million lei, is intended for the integration of the Horezu–Râmnicu Vâlcea area into the National Natural Gas Transport System and the supply of localities in Gorj and Vâlcea counties where there is currently no gas transport infrastructure.

Ion Sterian, the head of Transgaz, recently visited the construction site to monitor progress. The 92.1-kilometer pipeline, declared a national priority by government decree in late 2022, will feature a 500-millimeter diameter and operate at 50 bar pressure, with an estimated transport capacity of 250,000 standard cubic meters per hour. The route spans 22 administrative units across Gorj and Vâlcea counties, requiring the crossing of numerous roads, waterways, and railways.

The Tetila–Horezu–Râmnicu Vâlcea project was declared an object of national importance in the field of natural gas by Government Decision no. 1,590 of December 28, 2022.

The project addresses a critical energy gap, as many households and public institutions in the targeted areas of Gorj and Vâlcea currently rely on firewood, coal, or liquefied petroleum gas for heating and cooking. Transgaz anticipates that the new pipeline will enable natural gas supply for an estimated 85,545 households and 323 public institutions, including schools and medical facilities. This expansion is seen as vital for modernizing energy access and improving living conditions in these regions.

Through the realization of the project, Transgaz estimates that natural gas supply can be ensured for approximately 85,545 households and 323 public institutions, including educational units, medical units, places of worship, and cultural centers.

Financing for the 303 million lei investment includes a substantial non-reimbursable grant of approximately 101.71 million lei from the Environment Fund. The remaining costs will be covered by a mix of financial sources, including Transgaz's own funds. The pipeline will also connect to the BRUA (Bulgaria-Romania-Hungary-Austria) corridor and the Schitu Golești–Govora–Drăgășani pipeline, further enhancing regional gas distribution capabilities and potentially increasing flow rates.
