Robert Bush, a British funeral director, is facing a prison sentence for a disturbing scandal where bodies were left uncremated for months while relatives were given the wrong ashes. The extent of the mishandling was revealed when police, acting on a tip-off, discovered 31 bodies in a cold storage area at his funeral parlor, Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Among the grim findings was a stillborn baby that had been stored for nearly two years.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton described the scene at the sentencing hearing as "something from a horror scene," detailing that the majority of the uncovered bodies were in varying states of decomposition. The 48-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to 67 offenses spanning 12 years, affecting hundreds of victims. These offenses include preventing lawful and decent burial, theft, and fraud, with four fraud charges involving falsely presenting ashes as the remains of unborn children.

Jasmine Beverley, whose stillborn son Sunny's remains were found in a brown envelope on the floor despite her belief he had been cremated, expressed her shock. "I discovered that he was still in there almost two years after we’d had the funeral," she told BBC radio, calling the discovery "distressing." Beverley and other affected families are now campaigning for stricter regulations within the funeral industry.

Bush, who ran the funeral home, was entrusted by bereaved families but allegedly mistreated them on an "almost industrial scale." Police began their investigation in March 2024 after receiving concerns about "the deceased" at the business. The sentencing hearing is expected to hear statements from over 100 victims, highlighting the widespread impact of Bush's actions.
