33 Years After Abiola’s Victory, Nigeria Still Searching for Democracy, Adebayo Warns

Thirty-three years after the historic June 12, 1993 election, Nigeria's democratic journey is still incomplete, according to Prince Adewole Adebayo, a presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2027.

Adebayo marked Nigeria's Democracy Day by reflecting on the annulled election, won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, calling it a pivotal moment for Nigeria and Africa when many nations were under military rule or apartheid. He described the annulment as a betrayal of the Nigerian people's will and sovereignty, disrupting a crucial democratic transition.

While honoring MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat, and former President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing June 12 as Democracy Day, Adebayo argued that civilian rule has not fulfilled the promises of that era. He accused the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining democratic values through pressure on political parties, reduced civic participation, and interference by law enforcement.

Adebayo pointed to ongoing issues like vote buying, political violence, and electoral credibility questions that erode public trust. He called on Nigerians to actively defend democracy, emphasizing that the nation's future depends on insisting on free, fair, and credible elections. He also advocated for implementing constitutional provisions focused on citizen welfare, security, and well-being.
