347,000 kg of e-waste worth RM1.256 million seized at illegal factory

In a significant crackdown on environmental crime, authorities have confiscated a massive 347,000 kilograms of electronic waste, estimated to be worth RM1.256 million. The coordinated raids targeted two illegal e-waste processing facilities in Selangor, highlighting the persistent problem of unregulated waste management in the region.

A total of 347,000 kilograms of e-waste that had been dismantled, five compressor units, one dust collection system, four gas cylinders, a water recycling machine, two ovens, and a chimney were also seized.

The operation, spearheaded by the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department, underscores the government's commitment to combating environmental degradation. Beyond the substantial seizure of e-waste, which included dismantled components, compressors, dust collection systems, and recycling machinery, the raids also resulted in the apprehension of 25 foreign nationals. These individuals, aged between 19 and 50, are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

This action is part of a larger, ongoing campaign against various forms of illegal activities. According to Datuk Mohd. Zaki Ashar, Commander of the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) KDNKA Bukit Aman, his department has conducted 158 raids across the country from January 1st to date. These operations have covered a range of offenses, including smuggling of untaxed goods, leakage of controlled items, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife smuggling, and illegal e-waste operations, leading to the arrest of 335 individuals.

Authorities are encouraging the public to continue providing information to aid in the fight against such criminal enterprises. The investigation into the seized e-waste and the arrested individuals is proceeding under relevant sections of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. The Majlis Perbandaran Kuala Langat also issued a RM1,000 compound and a business cessation notice to the premises involved, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to illegal operations.
