36 of 63 miners rescued at Pasta de Conchos; Labor Secretary meets with families in Coahuila

Mexico's Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare, Marath Baruch Bolaños López, met with the families of miners from the Pasta de Conchos mine in Coahuila. The meeting aimed to inform them about the ongoing rescue efforts, listen to their concerns, and follow up on the Mexican government's commitments to achieve truth, justice, and full reparation for the victims.

During the meeting, Secretary Bolaños López reported that 36 bodies have been recovered from the mine to date. Of these, 31 have been identified, and 28 have been "dignified" and returned to their families following the necessary forensic procedures. The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) affirmed that these advancements are in line with commitment number 61 of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who pledged at the start of her administration that the rescue operations would continue as long as necessary to locate all 63 missing miners.

"The Pasta de Conchos rescue represents one of the clearest examples of the change in the Mexican State's actions. Faced with the abandonment that families endured for years, Mexican Humanism today places people at the center, assumes the responsibility of concluding the rescue, and maintains permanent support to guarantee truth, justice, and reparation," stated the Secretary. He reiterated that the families remain a fundamental part of the process and that open and continuous dialogue is a priority for the government, as instructed by the federal leader.

The rescue efforts are being conducted in coordination with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), which is executing the work; the Attorney General's Office (FGR), with support from the National Institute of Genomic Medicine for the recovery, identification, and delivery of remains; and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), providing support and funeral assistance to the families. Progress in the mine is substantial: Unit 1 shows 70% completion, Unit 2 is at 85%, and the ramps of Unit 3 are at 83%. Technical analyses are ongoing to determine the next search areas.

Since the commencement of the Reparation and Justice Plan for Pasta de Conchos in 2019, the Mexican government has fulfilled its indemnification obligations to the families. The rescue and identification process is a critical component of the broader commitment to address the historical injustices faced by the victims and their families.
