40 to 50 Students Feared Trapped in Delhi Hostel Collapse

Rescuers launched an urgent operation after a five-storey building housing a boys’ postgraduate hostel collapsed in south-west Delhi. Officials feared that 40 to 50 students could be trapped under the rubble.

At least three people died, two were in critical condition and nine students were rescued and admitted to nearby hospitals, hospital authorities said. Teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Civilian Technical Services and Civil Defence took part in the operation.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the teams were working on a “war footing.” Police said they received a PCR call about the incident at South Campus Police Station at around 1:34 p.m. A police official at the site said a preliminary inquiry indicated that around 40 to 50 students may have been inside when the building collapsed.

An eyewitness told the news agency ANI that the building was known as “Hostel Daze” and operated as a dedicated boys’ paying-guest hostel. The witness also said the adjacent building collapsed and that students in their rooms were trapped beneath the debris.
