Grandfather and two grandchildren drown in Lakshmipur pond

A 70-year-old man and his two grandchildren drowned in a pond in Lakshmipur after the children tried to save him when he failed to resurface, police said.

The victims were identified as Abu Siddique Patwary, 70, and his grandchildren Pias, 9, and Promi Akter, 7. All three lived in the Shakchar area of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.

The incident happened between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Shakchar, according to Wahid Parvez, officer-in-charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station. Police said Siddique had gone to a pond near his home with the children to bathe.

After he dived into the pond and did not return for a long time, the two children entered the water in an attempt to rescue him. Local residents recovered the three bodies about an hour later. Police suspect Siddique may have suffered a stroke underwater, after which the children drowned while trying to help him. A police team went to the scene, and the officer-in-charge said, “Necessary legal action will be taken following discussions with the family.”
