5 MCD officials suspended ‘with immediate effect’ in big action after Satya Niketan building collapse

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended five officials within a day of the Satya Niketan building collapse, including the deputy commissioner for the South Zone. The action followed an incident that killed at least seven people and prompted a wider crackdown on unauthorized construction.

The suspended officials are Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranvir Singh, Executive Engineer (Building) Lalit Kumar Goel, Assistant Engineer (Building) Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar. The suspension orders took effect immediately and will remain in place pending disciplinary proceedings. The officers will receive subsistence allowances under the rules.

MCD Commissioner Sanjiv Khirwar told Hindustan Times that the civic body had “zero tolerance” for unauthorized construction and that the building department would be held accountable. The action also came alongside an order for the immediate sealing of illegal structures with more than four floors. The notice warned that officials found guilty would face strict action, including dismissal.

The collapsed property, identified as P-14 Satya Niketan, stood on a plot of about 55 square yards and contained a basement, a ground floor and four upper floors. Officials said construction work in the basement of the boys’ paying guest accommodation caused structural damage before the building collapsed. The search and rescue operation for missing people, primarily students, entered its second day.

The MCD said its broader enforcement campaign between June 1 and September 3, 2026, resulted in demolitions at 983 properties, the sealing of 464 properties, 1,516 show-cause notices for unauthorized construction, 708 sealing notices and 726 demolition orders. The civic body also surveyed residential areas for commercial misuse. It said there were no records of bookings, sealing or complaints concerning the Satya Niketan property, which was reportedly built in the 1990s.
