518 Inmates at Kediri Prison Receive Independence Day Sentence Reductions; 12 Freed

A total of 518 inmates at the Kediri Class II A Penitentiary in East Java have been granted sentence reductions, known as remisi, in commemoration of Indonesia's 81st Independence Day. Among them, 12 individuals were immediately released after their sentences were shortened and they fulfilled all necessary criteria.

Gatot Tri Rahardjo, the Head of Kediri Class II A Penitentiary, stated that the remisi is a form of state recognition for inmates who have demonstrated behavioral changes and commitment to rehabilitation programs. "This award is a form of state recognition for inmates who have met the requirements and shown behavior and commitment in the rehabilitation program," he said.

The sentence reductions varied among the recipients. 127 inmates received a one-month reduction, 133 received two months, and 170 received three months. Additionally, 64 inmates got a four-month reduction, 21 received five months, and three were granted a six-month reduction. Of the 16 inmates proposed for Remisi Umum II, 12 were freed, while four must still serve the remainder of their sentences.

Kediri Mayor Vinanda Prameswati, present at the symbolic handover, congratulated the recipients and urged them to use this opportunity as a turning point for self-improvement. "Use this opportunity as a starting point to become better individuals. Show your families, the community, and the nation that you are capable of changing into law-abiding citizens who work honestly, respect others, and benefit your surroundings," she advised. The event also marked the inauguration of a reading corner at the prison, aimed at fostering literacy. Despite being significantly over capacity, housing 889 individuals against a 325-person design, the prison administration remains dedicated to optimizing rehabilitation and services.
