About Republika
Republika was founded in 1992 by Yayasan Abdi Bangsa, a foundation supported by Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim Indonesia (ICMI). In late 2000, Mahaka Media acquired a majority ownership stake, and the newspaper is now published by PT Republika Media Mandiri.
Republika was established to provide a platform for modernist Islamic perspectives and emphasize ethical journalism from an Islamic viewpoint for the Indonesian Muslim community. It aims to offer reliable news and analysis that promotes peace, justice, and social harmony. While it has expanded to cover general news, it maintains a focus on topics relevant to Indonesia's Muslim majority, as reflected in its content, including articles on Islamic economics and social issues. No significant editorial controversies were identified in the available assessments.
Reading context
Media systems vary by law, ownership, and editorial custom. We preserve each outlet's framing and add context so readers can compare coverage without treating one country as the default.
