600 Hectares of Rice Fields in Aceh Threatened by Drought

Around 600 hectares of rice fields in the Nagan Raya regency of Aceh province are facing drought conditions due to a prolonged dry spell. Officials cite a decrease in irrigation water flow and insufficient rainfall as the primary causes. The affected areas span multiple villages across the Kuala and Suka Makmue sub-districts. In Kuala, villages like Ujong Pasi (105 hectares), Alue Ie Mameh (80.25 hectares), and Simpang Peut (76.5 hectares) are impacted. Suka Makmue sub-district sees drought in Seumambek (30.34 hectares) and Macah (68.38 hectares). Many of these villages rely on rain-fed agriculture, making them particularly vulnerable to dry seasons. The lack of water is causing rice plants to wilt and hindering their growth, threatening production yields. The reduced water levels in irrigation channels exacerbate the situation, failing to meet the crops' water requirements. To mitigate the crisis, the Nagan Raya Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Office is managing water distribution schedules and organizing community efforts to clear irrigation channels of sediment. Proposals for water pump assistance and the search for alternative water sources, such as shallow wells, have also been submitted. The local government is optimizing water gates and inspecting irrigation networks to prevent leaks. Collaboration among field extension officers, farmer groups, and relevant agencies is crucial to minimize the threat of widespread crop failure.
