68 pledges unmet as 10th N’Assembly nears end — Report

Nigeria's 10th National Assembly is nearing the end of its tenure with a significant number of legislative promises left unfulfilled, according to a new assessment by the AdvoKC Foundation. The report, released by the civic-tech organization, tracked 92 legislative commitments made by lawmakers since the beginning of their term and found that 68 of these pledges remain unmet.

The House of Representatives scored a mere 26.8% in fulfilling its legislative agenda, delivering on only 13 out of 56 tracked commitments. The Senate performed slightly better, achieving a 44.11% fulfillment rate by delivering on nine out of 34 commitments. The report highlights specific areas of weakness, with the House scoring zero percent in the economy and jobs category and only six percent in governance and political reform.

While the Senate showed stronger performance in education (66.7%) and economic development (57.1%), major concerns remain regarding stalled reforms in constitutional amendments, youth inclusion, and local government autonomy. Commitments related to electoral reforms and constitutional amendments were also noted as largely unresolved.

With only one year left before the curtain falls on the 10th Assembly, this report is not an indictment but a crucial wake-up call.

Habib Sheidu, Project Director of AdvoKC Foundation, stressed that legislative agendas are not mere policy wish-lists but "solemn public covenants made with the Nigerian people." He urged lawmakers to utilize the remaining year of the Assembly to fast-track trapped reforms and deliver on their promises.
