70-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Repeatedly Stealing Sneakers

A 77-year-old man in Gwangju has been sentenced to one year in prison for repeatedly stealing sneakers. The court handed down the sentence after finding him guilty of theft charges under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes.

The man is accused of stealing four pairs of sneakers, valued at approximately 656,000 South Korean won (about $480 USD), from two shops within a large supermarket. The thefts took place over four separate occasions between September of last year and March of this year.

Adding to the severity of the crime, the man committed these offenses while under a parole period, having previously served prison time for multiple theft convictions. His repeated actions, despite prior incarceration, led the court to impose a firm sentence. The judge cited the man's multiple prior convictions for similar offenses and his continued pattern of theft during his parole period as key factors in the sentencing decision.
