700 cubic meters of timber seized in Chiapas sawmill inspections against illegal logging

Mexican environmental authorities have temporarily shut down two timber storage and transport centers in Chiapas and seized more than 700 cubic meters of wood. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) conducted inspections in the municipality of Comitán de Domínguez as part of an effort to combat illegal logging.

During the inspections, officials discovered significant irregularities at the two facilities. These included a lack of documentation proving the legal origin of the timber, absence of records for the entry and exit of forest products, and missing operational permits. These findings led to the temporary closure of both sites.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 705.4 cubic meters of raw materials and finished wood products. Among the seized items were 324 logs of pine timber, totaling over 132 cubic meters, and 118,818 pieces of sawn wood in various forms, amounting to more than 573 cubic meters. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the illegal activities.
