Mexico Deputy Speaker Hopes Ex-Governor's Arrest Aids Ayotzinapa Justice, Not Politics

Kenia López Rabadán, president of the Board of Directors of Mexico's Chamber of Deputies, has addressed the recent arrest of former Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre. Aguirre was detained on suspicion of concealing evidence concerning the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College.

I hope it is not, evidently, a political issue or a distraction, but rather justice for the families.

López Rabadán voiced her hope that Aguirre's arrest will not be exploited as a political maneuver. Instead, she urged that it be a genuine step towards justice for the families affected by the tragedy. The disappearance of the Ayotzinapa students remains a deeply painful and unresolved issue in Mexico's history.

"I hope it is not, evidently, a political issue or a distraction, but rather justice for the families," López Rabadán stated. She emphasized that the Ayotzinapa case continues to be an "open wound" for the country, transcending political affiliations and institutions.

The students disappeared from Ayotzinapa and everything that happened in that stage of our country's history is an open wound, it continues to be an open wound today, beyond political parties.

The core demand, she asserted, is for justice. This justice, she clarified, should not be contingent on the political party or the institutional affiliation of those involved. The priority remains uncovering the truth: knowing where the students are, what happened to them, and ensuring legal consequences for those responsible.
