80-year-old arrested for intentional arson in Kavala, Greece

Greek authorities have arrested an 80-year-old man in Kavala for intentionally starting a fire. The incident occurred in the Dipotamos area of the Nestos Municipality on the evening of August 16, 2026. The suspect allegedly used an open flame to set dry grass ablaze.

Fire Service investigators from the Anti-Arson Crimes Investigation Units (AKAE) responded promptly and apprehended the 80-year-old in an immediate procedure. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the act and is expected to appear before the competent prosecutor. This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the Fire Service to combat intentional arson, which poses a severe risk to lives, property, and the environment.

Data released by the Fire Service reveals a significant number of interventions against arsonists this year. From January 1 to August 16, 2026, 722 administrative fines totaling over 1.15 million euros were imposed. Additionally, 302 individuals were arrested under immediate procedures, with 271 cases attributed to negligence and 31 to intentional acts. The Fire Service emphasizes its unwavering stance against deliberate arson, vowing to investigate all such acts thoroughly and bring perpetrators to justice.
