80s animated classic "Jem" to get live-action series treatment

A live-action series adaptation of the beloved 1980s cartoon "Jem and the Holograms" is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The project was acquired by the studio in 2025 and will be produced by Kilter Films, known for its work on "Fallout."

The new series is described as a high-level live-action techno-thriller. The original "Jem and the Holograms" debuted in 1985, created by Christy Marx. It told the story of Jerrica Benton, a record label owner whose alter ego, Jem, fronted a rock band. The show featured original music and music videos, including the hit song "Truly Outrageous."

Despite concluding in 1988, the animated series maintained significant popularity, becoming one of the most-watched children's shows of the 1990s. Its dedicated fanbase even established JemCon, a convention that is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

This is not the first attempt to bring "Jem" to live-action; a film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu was released in 2015. Starring Aubrey Peeples, the movie did not meet expectations, grossing less than its production budget.
