89 Days Before the Election, Analyst Names Six Battlegrounds and Says New Taipei Is Key

With 89 days left before Taiwan’s election campaign begins, veteran media commentator Huang Wei-han has named six cities and counties to watch. He said the Democratic Progressive Party leads in Changhua, Chiayi and Yilan, while New Taipei, Hsinchu and Taitung remain too close to call.

Huang described New Taipei as the decisive contest. He pointed to a front-page report that incumbent New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi supports Kuomintang mayoral candidate Lee Chuan. Huang said such backing would normally be routine, then asked whether similar endorsements by Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai or Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che would receive the same treatment.

The commentator said the prominence given to the New Taipei endorsement showed how closely watched the race has become. He called the city the election’s “most important” battleground.

Huang also said the DPP is mounting an offensive in Taipei, while the KMT is fighting to capture Kaohsiung. Both cities are viewed as party strongholds, he said, and a defeat in either could create pressure reaching the party chair. He said the contests in Keelung and Hualien currently attract less attention and require further observation.
