9 Night Sky Events to Watch in August: From Eclipses to Meteor Showers

August 2026 is set to be a remarkable month for astronomy enthusiasts, offering a lineup of nine significant night sky events. These celestial occurrences include eclipses, meteor showers, and planetary conjunctions, providing ample opportunities for observation.

The month kicks off with a planetary alignment featuring Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and the Moon visible before sunrise from August 8 to 11. Mercury will also reach its best viewing point on August 2, appearing farther from the Sun in the morning sky. On August 7, skywatchers can witness a lunar occultation as the waning crescent Moon passes in front of the Pleiades star cluster.

The highlight of the month is a total solar eclipse on August 12, which will be visible across eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain. A partial eclipse will be seen in parts of Europe, Africa, Canada, and the eastern U.S. Following this, the Perseid meteor shower will peak on August 12-13, offering potentially over 100 meteors per hour under dark skies. The month concludes with a partial lunar eclipse on August 27-28, where Earth's shadow will cover about 96 percent of the full Moon, and a close approach between the Moon and Saturn on August 30-31.
