Tempo.co is operated by PT Info Media Digital, part of the publicly listed PT Tempo Inti Media Tbk. Its ownership structure is transparent, with approximately 30% held by the public and around 20% by Tempo employees, ensuring no single majority owner. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and founder Goenawan Mohamad also hold shares. The Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) made an investment in a subsidiary in 2024, but Tempo asserts this does not affect its editorial independence.

Media Bias/Fact Check rates Tempo as Left-Center biased with high factual reporting, noting its investigative journalism and focus on corruption, governance, and human rights issues. The outlet has a history of critical reporting, having been banned by the Soeharto government in 1994 and relaunched in 1998. Tempo has faced intimidation, including receiving severed animal parts at its office in March 2025 after critical reporting on the government. In November 2025, the Press Council of Indonesia found Tempo violated journalistic ethics for inaccurate and exaggerated coverage, and Tempo reportedly issued only a partial clarification. Tempo Digital's CEO acknowledges the impossibility of unbiased journalism but emphasizes striving for honest reporting through transparency and accountability.
