94-Year-Old Rescued From Mudslide Becomes Symbol of Nepal Tragedy

Bohara, found alive amidst the debris, was the sole survivor from a government-run nursing home in Rasuwa district, an area bordering China that was ravaged by the torrent of water and mud from the mountains. The army team used an excavator to free her from the deadly embrace of the mud.

Initially unable to speak due to shock, Bohara was taken to a trauma center in Kathmandu. Doctors discovered she suffers from senile dementia, which likely contributed to her inability to communicate her identity immediately after the ordeal. A relative later identified her among the hospitalized patients.

Doctors report that Bohara is recovering well.
