A destroyed home: Aleksi Kivekäs lost everything after a clearance company went to the wrong address, and the family has received nothing

Aleksi Kivekäs says his family is hanging in limbo after a clearance company went to the wrong home, emptied it and destroyed their belongings. The Kirkkonummi family has received no compensation from insurance companies.

The mistake began with a number error on a paper note. What followed has become a bitter dispute over who must pay for the damage. The insurers involved are arguing over responsibility, while the clearance company has refused to answer Helsingin Sanomat’s questions.

Kivekäs told the newspaper that the family is up against the wall and that his faith in the rule of law is being tested. He says the prolonged dispute has also put his health under strain.

“This is like hanging from a loose noose. It’s an absolute joke. No one is still taking responsibility, and the insurance companies are arguing at the expense of a family with children,” Kivekäs said.

Western Uusimaa police have launched a preliminary inquiry based on a criminal report. Kivekäs had previously warned that he feared the insurers would wash their hands of the clearance affair. He now says his worst fear has come true.
