A giant sausage arrives at Laugardalsvöllur

A large field cover, known locally as a “sausage,” has arrived at Laugardalsvöllur to protect the stadium’s grass from snow and frost.

The Icelandic Football Association, KSÍ, previously had to rent the equipment but has now bought its own cover. The stadium uses hybrid grass, combining natural grass with artificial fibers around the roots to improve durability.

The cover will be used this winter, as Laugardalsvöllur prepares to host the men’s cup final on September 11 and the women’s cup final the following day. A men’s first-division promotion playoff final is scheduled for September 19, followed by the men’s lower-division cup final a day later.

Iceland’s men’s national team also has three home matches ahead, against Estonia on September 26, Bulgaria on October 3 and Luxembourg on November 16.
