About Morgunblaðið
Morgunblaðið was founded in 1913 by Vilhjálmur Finsen and Ólafur Björnsson. Since 1919, it has been owned by the publishing company Árvakur hf.. In 2009, Árvakur hf. was acquired by a group of seven investors led by Óskar Magnússon, with other investors having ties to oil and fishing companies.
Morgunblaðið is an Icelandic daily newspaper and is considered the country's newspaper of record. It has a longstanding alignment with Iceland's center-right Independence Party, reflecting traditional conservative values in its editorial stance. Notable controversies include the 2009 appointment of Davíð Oddsson, a former Prime Minister and member of the Independence Party, as co-editor, which raised concerns about journalistic independence. Additionally, a cartoonist resigned in 2022 following editorial requests to moderate his submissions. Despite these instances of perceived editorial influence, the outlet is noted for prioritizing empirical reporting, and Iceland consistently ranks high in global press freedom indices.
