A new European gas crisis? Perfect storm appears to be brewing

Europe is bracing for a potentially severe winter as energy markets come under renewed pressure from escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. The conflict has sent European gas prices soaring, reaching their highest level since early January 2023, raising concerns about a repeat of the 2022 crisis.

Gas prices on the European TTF benchmark climbed to 63.14 euros per megawatt-hour on Friday, a stark contrast to the stable prices around 9 euros in the U.S., which remain largely unaffected by the Persian Gulf conflict. This price surge is exacerbated by critically low gas reserves across Europe, nearly as depleted as they were in the crisis year of 2022. Furthermore, Asian countries are actively seeking alternative gas supplies as Qatari exports face disruptions, intensifying competition with Europe and driving prices upward.

Energy experts are sounding the alarm about Europe's ongoing structural vulnerability in its energy supply. The continent has shifted its dependence from Russian gas to U.S. supplies, a situation complicated by past threats from former President Trump to curtail gas flows. Analysts emphasize that the global gas market is fragmented, unlike the more unified oil market, with distinct regional blocs. They strongly advise a transition away from natural gas towards renewable electricity to ensure long-term energy security and stability.
